[Article] A Study on the Derivation of Design Ideas by Utilizing Multiple Intelligences

Design ideas play an important role in design projects. They are closely related to design factors, targets, keywords, concepts and outcomes. Understanding the importance of design ideas, designers have provided various design methodologies. However, design education methodologies have not been suggested. Recognizing this problem, the researcher aims to develop and present methodologies of design idea derivation and design education using multiple intelligences.

 

This research investigates the development of methodologies of design idea derivation and design education targeting college students and includes the following contents: First, the derivation of design ideas using multiple intelligences is explored. Second, the relationship between the process of deriving design ideas and the intelligence theory is investigated. Third, a method of utilizing the design education methodology using multiple intelligences is suggested.

 

First, the process of design idea derivation is divided into a total of 7 steps: problem recognition - cognition - external factors - memory - intelligence - knowledge - keyword. Second, it is performed in 7 steps of behavior process among the design thinking types: problem recognition data research analysis application summary deviation - confirmation. Third, 3 steps of psychological behavior among the thinking types are conducted: language and visual cognition - verbal and shape cognition - sensory, explicit and procedural memory. Fourth, divergent thinking and convergent thinking are performed. “Divergent thinking” is followed by the process of deriving design ideas. “Convergent thinking” is conducted during the process of intelligence, knowledge and keywords. Fifth, 7 steps are conducted for the structure of intellect models. “Contents” is applied from the problem recognition to memory, “operation” from cognition to keywords, and “product” from memory to keywords. Sixth, the theories of multiple intelligences are conducted in 2 steps and applied to the steps of knowledge and intelligence. Seventh, 3 steps of triarchic theory of intelligence are performed. “Analytical intelligence” is applied in the step of external factors, “create intelligence” in the memory step, and “practical intelligence” in the intelligence step.

 

The 7 steps of design idea derivation help derive various ideas. It was revealed that various concepts and images could be produced based on the derived ideas. With design process and design education methodologies, it is possible to derive design ideas efficiently and produce design outcomes.
